Champion Hurdle 2024 – 18 In The Running But Who Will Win? Odds & Best Predictions

Champion Hurdle

The Champion Hurdle is one of the most anticipated races in the British National Hunt racing calendar, attracting top-tier hurdlers from across the UK and Ireland.

A Grade 1 race and the highlight of the opening day of the Festival, it is celebrated for its rich history and challenging course.

Established in 1927, the idea behind its creation was to provide a platform for elite hurdlers to showcase their agility, speed, and jumping prowess.

Nearly 100 years later and it has churned out some of the most exceptional hurdlers anywhere in the world.

From three-time winner Hatton’s Grace to Istabraq, Hurricane Fly, and more recently Buveur d’Air and the queen that is Honeysuckle, these champions are celebrated for their legacy in the race.

So which among the 18 that make up the Champion Hurdle 2024 entries, have the best chance of taking the crown on March 12th?

Betting On The Champion Hurdle

The race is really heating up with an outstanding potential field of hurdlers looking set to compete at Cheltenham.

As expected, it will attract a huge number of bets so where you choose to wager your hard-earned cash is of paramount importance.

If you don’t already have an online account and would like to open one, the first piece of advice is to always pick from the UK-licensed horse racing betting sites. These are heavily regulated, 100% secure and have the best reputations for being fair and safe places to gamble.

Next, consider the type of bet you want to put on. If you think you have the winner go with the simple win bet. If you fancy an outsider to place, consider an each-way bet.

And if you can’t decide between two then a reverse forecast may be the way to go – especially in this race.

Always check for promotions and offers on the day of the race. This is the point where you can really capitalise as bookmakers will entice you with free bets or a bump in the odds.

Every little helps so maximise your betting experience and use as many offers as you can to make your money go further.

Champion Hurdle 2024 Entries

As mentioned above, the race in 2024 has 18 potential runners still left in contention. The maximum number for this race is 24 so all have a guaranteed spot.

Whether or not they all remain will depend on connections and alternative Cheltenham options.

For example, Lossiemouth also has an entry into the Mares Hurdle for which she is the 4/7 odds-on favourite.

So despite some decisions still having to be made, who is in the mix in 2024?

Champion Hurdle 2024 Predictions

The list above is in descending order alphabetically. However, it’s the odds that matter, and the shorter they are, the greater the threat they pose to the bookies.

Few races have horses so good that TWO go off ‘odds on’ but that’s exactly the case with this year’s renewal of the Champion Hurdle.

It looks like an almighty showdown between Constitution Hill (4/7) and State Man (4/6) as Nicky Henderson and Willie Mullins go head-to-head.

Barring a major upset, the winner is likely to be one of these two – but which one?

With eight wins from eight, including the Christmas Hurdle last time out at Kempton, Constitution Hill knows exactly what it takes to win this race.

In fact, he won it last year beating rival, State Man, by an incredible nine lengths.

But before you run out and bet on him, State Man’s credentials this season have been absolutely impeccable.

With three back-to-back Grade 1 wins at Punchestown and Leopardstown, he bagged the Irish Champion Hurdle on February 4th and there’s nothing to suggest he won’t put in a repeat performance at Cheltenham in a couple of weeks.

They are as close as two horses can get but I think State Man edges it out and will win the Champion Hurdle in 2024.

Race Records

It should come as absolutely no surprise that Nicky Henderson is the leading trainer in this race.

With nine wins under his belt, including Constitution Hill (2023), Epatante (2020), and Buveur D’Air (2017, 2018) he has a stronghold on the Champion Hurdle.

Of the 18 on the list, Henderson handles four of them though Mullins will give him a run for his money with his five potential runners.

Between them, they train 50% of the contenders. That is a staggering number and solidifies them as being in a class of their own.

In terms of jockeys, three have won the Champion Hurdle on four occasions. They are Ruby Walsh, Barry Geraghty, and Tim Molony.

All are now out of the game with Rachael Blackmore the only current jockey to have won this race twice in recent years, on Honeysuckle in 2021 and 2022.

Will she get a chance to a third victory in 2024 or will it come down to Nico de Boinville and Paul Townend?

We can’t wait to find out!
