Cheltenham Festival 2025: The Races, Drama, and Stories That Stole the Show
As the door closes on another incredible Cheltenham Festival, we learned quite a few things. The favourites don’t always win, 150/1 outsiders can shock everybody and romp home, Willie Mullins is still a force to be reckoned with, and sometimes, a little help from above can get us over the line.
The 2025 Festival was one for the ages. With more surprises, epic triumphs, and heartbreaking stories than we can count, fans of horse racing came away after four days of racing that will be remembered for years to come.
Seasoned champions faced off against promising newcomers, while trainers and jockeys showcased their skills in pursuit of glory. The 2025 festival proved once again why Cheltenham holds a special place in the hearts of racing fans, with its unique blend of tradition and unpredictability.
Poniros Shocks the World in JCB Triumph Hurdle
The opening race on Gold Cup Day provided one of the biggest surprises in Cheltenham history when Poniros, a 100-1 outsider, claimed victory in the Grade One JCB Triumph Hurdle.
This astonishing win made Poniros the longest-priced winner ever of the race and tied the record for the longest-priced horse to score at The Festival in the modern era. For fans who had taken their chances and backed him, it was a massive return for their faith in him.
Incidentally, if they had used the latest no deposit bonus casino reviews to choose their betting market, they could even have backed him at 150/1 earlier in the day. That’s why it’s always good to shop around!
But, what makes this victory even more remarkable is that it was Poniros’ first public start over hurdles. He literally didn’t even have ‘form’ beside his name.
Trainer Willie Mullins, known for his ability to produce champions, admitted he didn’t expect such a performance.
“We were hoping he would run well and be a nice horse for next year, so he’s ahead of schedule,” Mullins said after the race.
The Golden Horn gelding’s triumph is a reminder that in Cheltenham, anything can happen.
Marine Nationale’s Poignant Champion Chase Victory

The Queen Mother Champion Chase, one of the most prestigious races of the festival, provided a deeply moving moment when Marine Nationale stormed to victory.
The win was particularly poignant as it came just weeks after the tragic death of jockey Michael O’Sullivan, who had ridden Marine Nationale to victory in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle two years earlier.
Sean Flanagan, who took the reins for this emotional triumph, acknowledged the bittersweet nature of the win.
“Hugely emotional for a lot of reasons,” Flanagan said after the race. “His family find it very hard, jockeys in Ireland, England and around the world have been under a cloud in the last couple of weeks.”
Marine Nationale’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, finishing a full 18 lengths ahead of the odds-on favourite Jonbon. The victory was made even more remarkable by the fact that Jonbon had suffered a terrible jump during the race, nearly unseating jockey Nico de Boinville – and he still managed to finish in second place!
Inothewayurthinkin Claims Gold Cup Glory for Cromwell
The Cheltenham Gold Cup, the most prestigious race of the festival, saw Inothewayurthinkin deny Galopin Des Champs a famous third consecutive win. Trained by Gavin Cromwell and ridden by Mark Walsh, the seven-year-old horse showcased an impressive turn of foot to power clear and secure victory by six lengths.
This win was particularly significant for Cromwell, who expressed his disbelief after the race. “I’m absolutely speechless,” he told Racing TV. “We’ve had a lot of faith in this horse. Credit has to go to Keith Donoghue with this horse, he’s been a part of him all the way.”
The victory was also a moment of triumph for owner JP McManus, who has been involved with the horse since it was a foal. “You have to enjoy these moments, they are so long in the making,” McManus said. “We’ve had him since he was a foal, he was bred by (wife) Noreen. It’s a very exciting time and I will treasure it.”
This was McManus’ second Gold Cup win, his first being with Synchronised in 2012, who was also bred by his wife Noreen. Maybe he should just let her breed all his horses from now on.
Golden Ace’s Surprise Champion Hurdle Win

In one of the most dramatic races of the Cheltenham festival, Golden Ace, a 25-1 outsider, emerged victorious in the Champion Hurdle. The race changed completely after falls from favourites Constitution Hill and State Man, opening the door for Golden Ace to seize the moment.
Trained by Jeremy Scott and ridden by Lorcan Williams, Golden Ace’s victory was a triumph of the underdog. Scott, known for his modesty, almost apologised for winning in the face of his rivals’ misfortunes. “It probably wasn’t the prettiest,” he remarked after the race.
The win was particularly sweet for owner Ian Gosden, who had opted to enter Golden Ace in the Champion Hurdle against the advice of his trainer and jockey.
“It’s unbelievable. I thought we would struggle against Lossiemouth so we thought we might as well have a go at this one,” Gosden said.
That means Mares have won five of the last Champion Hurdle renewals, with many trainers opting to race their stable stars in the race with the higher purse of £450,000 over the Mares Hurdle, which is worth only £120,000.
Willie Mullins’ Dominance Continues
The 2025 Cheltenham Festival saw Willie Mullins further cement his status as the most successful trainer in the event’s history. Mullins added another 10 winners to his impressive tally, bringing his total Cheltenham winners to 113.
Mullins’ success was spread across all four days of the festival. He kicked off with two winners on the opening day, including favorites Kopek Des Bordes in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and Lossiemouth in the Mares’ Hurdle.
His dominance continued throughout the week, culminating in an extraordinary Friday, when he won the first four races, including Poniros’s shocking 100-1 victory in the Triumph Hurdle.
This performance not only secured Mullins the Top Trainer award for a record-extending 12th time but also highlighted the continued mastery of Irish trainers at the festival.
Rachael Blackmore’s Historic Stayers Hurdle Victory
Rachael Blackmore added another chapter to her already illustrious career by winning the Stayers Hurdle aboard Bob Olinger. This victory completed Blackmore’s set of wins in Cheltenham’s feature races, having previously won the Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle, Champion Chase, and Ryanair Chase.
Bob Olinger, trained by Henry de Bromhead, showcased his class by beating favorite Teahupoo in a thrilling finish. Blackmore’s tactical ride was crucial to the victory, as she positioned Bob Olinger perfectly before powering away up the hill.
That takes her tally of Festival wins to 18 and solidifies her place as one of the greatest jockeys of her generation.
Another Year Done and Dusted
From Marine Nationale’s poignant win in the Champion Chase to Poniros’ shocking triumph in the Triumph Hurdle, the festival delivered stories that captivated racing fans – and made the bookies sign with relief!
Inothewayurthinkin’s Gold Cup victory for Gavin Cromwell and Golden Ace’s surprise win in the Champion Hurdle added to the drama, while Willie Mullins’ continued dominance and Rachael Blackmore’s historic achievements highlighted the enduring excellence at the top of the sport.
As the dust settles on another memorable Cheltenham festival, the racing world already looks forward to what stories and triumphs the next Cheltenham will bring.
